Why you should pick Squarespace over Wordpress or Wix

My first experience at trying to build my own website for my clinic, probably sounds a lot like yours.

My first website was a rushed Wordpress website because that was the platform "everyone said was the best website platform for naturopaths” So I thought how hard could it be, i’ll do it myself. My budget was small so I knew I had to take the DIY route which didn’t scare me that much, because I had used it a few times for whilst working in other industries but honestly. I wanted to throw the laptop out the window. I found the platform frustrating with all the others, the free templates, the paid templates, the plugin options and really, it was and not very intuitive, so I put the project on hold for a very long time.

It wasn’t till I went searching for other options I found Wix, my clinic With Wellness was originally built on this which was great for 12 months. I had an embed booking system, an online shop for 500 item Testing and it was easy enough to add things. The huge issue came with the lack of functionality and it was a clunky system for the price I was paying. After a few unsuccessful attempts, a few strong cups of herbal tea I came across Squarespace.

Turns out I'm not the only one who had this experience, many of my clients come to me with half website, are confused with what platform suite them or don’t know how to add things to with and have some form of control over it. Over and over in Facebook groups, I seen people posting and complaining about the “white screen of death” where they have updated their site as it has asked and it’s “broken” the website, numerous plugins options, hosting confusion and not knowing there is a clear difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com (for those that don’t know, the ones that are beautiful with lots of custom aspects are wordpress.org).

Now, this is not to say that Wordpress isn't a powerful platform - it is absolutely amazing and if you do get a designer to create a website for you (you can check out my Wordpress website costs here) have the time to tend to it’s needs, spend time learning some basics or on call tech support then it may be the one for you. However, for those of you who aren't the most tech savvy but want to be able to easily update the website yourself,. are very time poor and want someone like a receptionist to sort it whilst you are in consultation, I say skip right over the sleepless nights go with Squarespace instead!

You could use WIX and whilst it is an amazing do it yourself or starter website, there may come a time where it’t not working for you, that's okay as websites are a constant work in progress. Wix API is a quick way to create a website yourself however be warned the technical support is very lax with this company hence why it didn’t take the lead in my favourite platform.

I'm all about keeping it simple so you can focus on your clients and building your business rather than be knee deep in website worries and codes. which is why I recommend that you go with Squarespace. This applies to naturopaths, nutritionists, herbalists, myotherapists, massage therapists, kinesiologist, healers and those who resonate with this blog.

Here are the reasons why I love it so much:

Squarespace is the perfect solution for any technology level. It’s simple drag and drop functionality means that you can make edits right there, you can add blogs from your phone and there are no plugins needed to add an instagram reel, social media links are quick and easy to connect. You could have a website live in as quick as a week.

Your website is your first impression to all your clients, they find you firstly on google and then on facebook and if you don’t have at least one of these then you may be missing out on a booking. Honestly, in this day and age, you need it to look professional & truly represent you and what you do 24/7. office hours apply for contacting however people search all day and night long. Luckily, Squarespace comes equipped with over 40 templates - all of which are gorgeous, stylish and functional (which you can further customise), unsplash images are inbuilt Into the squarespace platform so It saves you downloading and uploading images (except your branded images).

Your website will not only look amazing on your laptop, but also on your phone, yay it’s automatically friendly to all devices. This is key from a user standpoint and a huge plus for SEO (making sure that your site is discoverable by Google). Most of my naturopathic clients click my website link from facebook or instagram from their iPhone.

There is no need to constantly receive emails and notifications to update, provide maintenance and security issues with a Squarespace. You don't have to worry about your site going down due to pressing the wrong button (except delete-site which may also be recovered) and Squarespace has fantastic support if you do run into any problems! They don’t offer support on any coding but they will with errors, and how to do things like add a newsletter list or billing, marketing and basic SEO assistance. They also don’t use “big words”, when explaining things and can be contacted via chat, email or you can search their blogs.

Squarespace can be paid monthly incase you change your mind (hopefully you don’t as its amazing) It starts at $12-$26/US month. Not only is the monthly fee affordable (that price is covered in one consultation) - think about how much money you'll save by being able to make changes yourself. You won’t need to email and wait for the designer every time you need to make a small change. This in itself makes the monthly fee worth it financially. You can also pay yearly for a discount and at the date of this blog, you can connect a new email account via gmail as long as it not been used before.

I recommend starting with the Business Plan, you can upgrade later if needed. If you sell online you can upgrade and link in PayPal or stripe for payment.

Once you get comfortable with the platform, adding new content, photos and blogging with Squarespace is super simple. You could add a button, a new image, new service, edit the content in a few minutes and save it. It’s live immediately.

7. SEO

The Search Engine Optimisation is fairly easy with a checklist available to make sure you have it all sorted. You can connect google analytics within the dashboard which tracks what people search to find you (which is what SEO is) as well as how many people have been on your website and for how long.

These are just 7 of the reasons why as a natural medicine practitioner you should pick squarespace over wordpress platform even if you are a small business, medium or large. What is the point in spending thousands or hours with a web designer when you don’t have time or know how to edit it.

Comment below if this was helpful and what stage you are in with your website. I am currently at the space of realising that just because you should do your own website doesn’t mean you should, it’s a time vortex!
